Hard Drive Security Requires Computer Security
Computer security is an important element in keeping the data on your hard drive safe. The hard drive is part of a system and this means that many layers of hardware and software need to be considered in order to keep your data secure.
If your hard drive contains your banking information and a social security number, you need to be concerned about identity theft. If the hard drive in question happens to be in a notebook, you will want to be extra careful. You might even want to consider putting a password on your hard drive and encrypting all your important data.
Wireless Security
Wireless computing requires even more attention to computer security. If you are using public hot spots, be aware that other nearby persons may be able to intercept and view any plain text passwords. If you are setting up a wireless network at home, take some time to become familiar with the settings on your wireless router.
Privacy Issues
Increasingly, spyware is compromising individual privacy and personal computer security. This is a deceitful form of software that sneaks into your computer through various underhanded means. It is wise to make a periodic spyware scan of any computers that are connected to the Internet. Adware is not sneaky like spyware, but it is still viewed as a pest so that many spyware removal programs will remove these also.
Firewall for Security
Connecting to the Internet without a firewall is ill advised. There are two kinds of firewalls, a software firewall that runs on your personal computer, and a hardware firewall that is a dedicated box connected to your network. The best security is provided by a hardware firewall but if you don't have one of those yet, then be sure to at least run a software firewall. Win XP includes a free software firewall.
Viruses Compromise Security
Computer viruses are the source of much fear and loathing. Some viruses are fairly benign but others can destroy your hard drive data. Don't wait until your computer has been infected. Get a virus scanner and make sure it's updated regularly.
