Maxtor Hard DriveThe Maxtor Hard Drive is a popular consumer brand. Over the years, I've bought many Maxtor drives and I've never been disappointed with the quality or performance. Unfortunately, Maxtor no longer exists as an independent corporation. The entire company was acquired by Seagate in May of 2006. Yet, because of its good name, the Maxtor brand will continue to be used by Seagate. This wasn't the first time Maxtor was involved in consolidating the Hard Drive Industry. In April of 2001, Maxtor acquired the hard drive portion of Quantum because Quantum wanted to get out of the hard disk business and focus its efforts on the Tape Drive and Backup market. A useful and free disk utility that comes with the Maxtor Hard Drive is the MaxBlast drive copy software. This utility allows you to copy everything on your old disk, including the operating system, to your new Maxtor disk and be up and running in a short time. More information about Maxtor MaxBlast can be found on the Seagate website. Hard drive problems are of two very different types that should not be confused. One type are logical or file system type errors. These problems are easily fixed with most of the widely available tools that help you recover lost files or fix broken file systems. The other type of problem is a physical disk problem that may easily result in the loss of all your data. If you suspect a physical hard drive malufunction, it is better not to use general purpose programs to attempt to recover your files. It's possible that these programs could do even further damage to your hard drive. Most hard drive manufactures provide free utilities that can help you determine if your drive has actual physical problems, and Seagate is no exception. If your drive is making strange noises, it's better to use it as little as possible by booting form another hard disk. The free SeaTools for DOS utility allows you to boot this disk utility from another drive such as a CD-ROM or a floppy. This tool can help you verify if your hard drive has any physical problems. |
