Seagate Hard DriveThe Seagate hard drive is a well-known consumer brand. The Seagate company was founded in 1979 under the name of Shugart Technology. Since that time, they have steadly increased their contribution to the computer marketplace by producing many innovative hard drive product lines. Seagate is now a dominant player in the hard drive market. This dominance was built over the years both through internal growth and through acquisitions. The two most notible acquisitons are Conner Peripherials in February 1996, and Maxtor Corporation in May 2006. If you own a Maxtor or Seagate hard disk drive, you can download and use the MaxBlast drive copy software. This utility allows you to copy everything on your old disk, including the operating system, to your new disk drive and be up and running in a short time. More information about MaxBlast can be found on the Seagate website. Hard drive problems are of two very different types that must not be confused. One type are logical or file system type errors. These problems are easily fixed with most of the widely available tools that help you recover lost files or fix broken file systems. The other type of problem is a physical disk problem that may easily result in the loss of all your data. If you suspect a physical hard drive malufunction, it is better not to use general purpose programs to attempt to recover your files. It's possible that these programs could do even further damage to your hard drive. Most hard drive manufactures provide free utilities that can help you determine if your drive has actual physical problems, and Seagate is no exception. If your drive is making strange noises, it's better to access the drive as little as possible by booting form another hard disk. The free SeaTools for DOS utility allows you to boot this disk utility from another drive such as a CD-ROM or a floppy. This tool can help you verify if your hard drive has any physical problems. |
