This SATA to USB Converter
Does it All
USB Converter COMBO
Have you ever wanted to copy an old parallel IDE hard drive to your new computer that only has SATA ports? Or, have you ever just wanted to plug in an old hard drive with out having to open your desktop case or installing the drive in a USB external enclosure?
If you have, then you will find the Coolmax USB Multifunctional Converter to be a useful device. I use it all the time to temporarily plug in spare drives.
This adapter is not intended for continuous use because it leaves your drive exposed to accidental damage. Its primary and best purpose is to quickly connect a hard drive to your computer with a minimum of effort. Once the drive is recognized by your system, merely copy your files and then disconnect it from your computer.
Because the Coolmax converter doesn’t come with an enclosure, the packaging is rather small...
CD-350-COMBO for 2.5” / 3.5” / 5.25” IDE / SATA Device
The connector unit includes a USB cable that is about 24 inches long. Surprisingly, there are two USB connectors at the end of the cable but they are not interchangeable. The red plug is only intended to provide extra power for the laptop hard drives that use more than 500mA. So, don’t use that red plug if you’re using the power adapter.
The main unit of the Coolmax device contains 3 different hard drive interfaces: 1) SATA interface, 2) 3.5 / 5.25 parallel IDE interface, and a 3) 2.5 parallel IDE interface. The SATA interface is the same size for both the 2.5" and 3.5" drives. Unfortunately this adapter doesn't handle the Micro-SATA interface used on the 1.8" laptop hard drives.
A power adapter is used to power the desktop hard drives and the CD/DVD drives. The adapter plugs directly into the parallel IDE drives. However, since SATA drives have a different type of power connector than the old IDE drives, the power adapter is connected to the Coolmax unit when connecting a desktop SATA hard disk drive.
I don’t recommend that you use the backup software included with this unit. You’re better off learning how to use one of the free backup programs such as Comodo Backup.
