What is a Windows Undelete?
A Windows undelete utility may be used to recover a file you thought was permanently lost. Did you accidentally delete a file but you need it back right away? If you are running Windows, then recovering a deleted file is fast and easy. You can merely download a file recovery utility to get your files back immediately.
The tick to doing a successful file recovery is to restore the file before the data is overwritten by a new file. If you download the recovery program to the disk that contains the file you want to recover, there is a small chance you could permanently lose your file. For a successful recovery, don’t write anything to the disk once you discover that you want to do a file recovery.
Why is a Deleted File Still on the Disk?
What happens when a file is deleted on your hard drive, is that Windows loses track of the data, but it hasn't been wiped from the hard disk. If you really want to erase a file beyond recovery, you will need to obtain a disk erase utility. In normal circumstances, when you empty the recycle bin, the data remains on the disk; the disk space occupied by the file is marked as free and Windows no longer knows where the disk file data is located. A Windows undelete program recovers a deleted file, by scanning the disk for free files that have not been overwritten by other data.
Recycle-Bin Problems
The Windows recycle bin can be handy when it works. Normally, when you do a delete in Windows, you can recover the file by getting it out of the recycle bin. Unfortunately, there are limits to how far this system of protection can go. Eventually, you will need to empty the recycle bin because the disk is running out of space; or, the file being deleted may simply be too large for the recycle bin. However, it is worse is when the deleted file bypasses the recycle bin completely. One way this can happen is to use the shift-delete keys to delete a file.
What Types of Files may be Recovered?
A file recovery utility doesn’t care what type of file needs to be undeleted. So long as Windows can read the file, it can be undeleted. The file or folder may be compressed and encrypted; it may be a video, image, or plain document; no matter what the content, it can be restored. A good Windows undelete program can do it all.
Be Proactive
It's so easy to accidentally delete a file. If it hasn't happened to you yet, be safe had have a Windows undelete utility available for an emergency. This will avoid the problem of installing a file recovery program, and having it be directly responsible for overwriting the data of the file you want to recover.
